National Health Day
22nd-Dec-2010 02:39 pm

The day of the El Gordo Lottery drawing is also National Health Day in Spain. That's because everyone who doesn't win says, "Well, at least I still have my health." And good health is priceless.

I'm healthy, and I congratulate all the winners, none of whom are me -- but, oh well, it was fun to dream. Thank you to those who wished me luck. It's the thought that counts.

Now the Christmas festivities have begun in earnest in Spain. Even Zapatero and Rajoy, two politicians normally engaged in a daily duel to the death, have wished each other happy holidays. Expect as little as possible to be done between now and January 10 by everyone, including me.

What a funny tradition! So logical and yet so quaint. It deserves to go in some book.

If you ever want to write about it, I can tell you lots more details. For example, the children who draw the numbers sing each winning number and its prize. It takes about three hours and quite a few teams. Why children? Because innocent hands are honest hands.

What a charming thing! I have no idea if I'll ever have a place for it, but I'll try to keep it on the back burner. It just seems perfect for some story.
