Téllez Street bombing memorial today

Let me see..

Seven years ago this morning, ten terrorists bombs exploded on four commuter trains during rush hour as they headed toward Atocha station in Madrid. More than 2,000 people were injured and 191 were killed.

As one of the trains passed Téllez Street a half-mile from my home, four bombs exploded, each in a different coach, and 64 people were killed there. I remember the sound of the bombs, the sight of people weeping in the street, the confusion, and the constant wail of sirens until evening.

Although there are grand memorials elsewhere, this is the one at Téllez Street as it looked this afternoon in the rain. It's just a tiny garden next to the wall and fence alongside the railroad tracks, but it's never forgotten. As I was leaving, three women came with more flowers.

Wow, I can't believe it's been seven years. But then, I can't believe it's been 10 years since 9/11. Except that in many ways, the world has irrevocably changed in those 7 and 10 years.

Yet remains depressingly the same in many other ways.
